Samuel Shelton is a mogul of sorts. The CEO of GameCo, producer of Dead Rite, one of the world’s best selling video games, Shelton heads a billion dollar company. As the plot opens, he’s trying to relax before he flies off to Japan to attend the Tokyo Game Show with a vodka on the rocks as he watches his last California sunset from the balcony of his high-rise condo in Beverly Hills
But he has a lot on his mind his alcoholic wife is dead and his washed up starlet girl friend, Sharon Grant, is ignoring him. When the telephone rings he rushes into his apartment and suddenly the murder game begins.
A week later Shelton’s decomposing body is discovered in a shallow grave near GameCo’s weekend retreat above Big Bear Lake. Sheriff Department Homicide Detective Lt. Leonard Hicks is on the case. Amid the media frenzy, Hicks and his young team, detectives, Kelly Fahey and Luis Torres stay under the radar working by the book.
Hicks thinks Kelly, a diminutive redhead, is the prettiest cop he’s ever worked with, but he would never admit that to her. She looks up to Hicks as the father she never had. Luis, a wiry, cocky young man, had to drink half a gallon of water and stretch his skinny neck to its limit to pass the department physical. To look more macho he wears snakeskin cowboy boots with and a Kevlar vest to add a little brawn to his chest.
Hicks and his team stay under the radar as they follow clues that seem to lead directly to GameCo’s President, Gordon Duffy. Duffy and his English wife, Jen, discovered the body and Duffy was alone at the company cabin the weekend of the murder.
But then Hick’s friend and Fahey’s and Torres’ mentor, Sgt. Ben Jackson, a big man in every way, asks to join the team and he and Fahey discover two other seemingly unrelated cold blooded murders are part of the game and a trail of evidence that seems to put Hicks at the scene of the crime the night of Shelton’s murder.
Plowing forward with his own reputation on the line, Hicks and his loyal team have to work their way through a puzzle of stalling lawyers, police and prosecutor protocol, and lying witnesses. The murder game becomes a fast paced and deadly dark trip through the riches and ethical poverty of an Ayn Rand-like dream world that becomes a nightmare.
